In Detail
Stunning dry Grand Cru power from Germany’s undisputed Riesling king
When serious wine lovers talk about dry German Riesling, Weingut Dönnhoff sits at the absolute pinnacle of royalty. For generations, the Dönnhoff family has defined the potential of the Nahe region, transforming steep, treacherous hillside plots into some of the most sought-after white wines on Earth.
Among their legendary portfolio, the Felsenberg vineyard—often designated by its iconic ruined watchtower, the Felsentürmchen—is a true force of nature. Planted on near-vertical cliffs composed of dark volcanic porphyry rock, these old vines absorb extreme heat by day and radiate it back by night. This intense geothermal microclimate creates a dry Grand Cru (Großes Gewächs) Riesling unlike any other: intensely concentrated, wildly complex, and remarkably energetic.
In the 2022 vintage, Cornelius Dönnhoff delivered a total masterpiece. The wine opens with vibrant blood orange, white peach, and fresh bergamot, but its true soul lies in its fierce mineral core. On the palate, a wave of salty volcanic stone and citrus pith is propelled by brilliant, crystalline acidity that stretches into a minute-long finish. It possesses the rare ability to balance bone-dry power with weightless, floating elegance.
Dönnhoff’s Großes Gewächs bottlings command international waiting lists, disappearing into collector cellars the second they are released. We managed to secure a coveted parcel directly from the estate for our WineKey community. If you crave world-class dry white wine with legendary aging potential, grab yours before it’s gone.
