Volcanic Elegance, Etna’s Secret

When you want a red wine that delivers both the raw drama of an active volcano and the refined elegance of a serious collector’s piece, look no further than the 2022 Terre Nere Etna Rosso “Anniversario – Calderara Sottana”. From the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, this is not your everyday Etna Rosso — it’s a milestone bottle, a celebration of terroir, vine age and place.

The story begins with the vineyard: at 600-650 metres above sea level in the Contrada Calderara Sottana, on soils composed of jet-black pumice, solid volcanic rock and fine decomposed ash.

The fruit comes from the “Bellacolonna” subplot (just 3 hectares) planted in 2006–2007 — a young-vine parcel by Etna standards, but conceived with rigor and site-specific intent for this anniversary bottling.

The vines are organically managed, and winemaking follows a restrained but purposeful path: spontaneous malolactic fermentation, aging in French oak barriques, tonneaux and casks (10% new oak) for approximately 14 months, followed by resting in stainless before bottling.

What does that mean in the glass? The 2022 Anniversario opens with a shimmering garnet hue and a bouquet that begins with blood-orange peel, dusty rose petals, wild strawberry, and a hint of ash-smoke, then deepens into forest floor, dried cherries, leather, and volcanic rock. Reviews call it “vivid and intense… a burst of autumnal spices, dusty rose and blood orange” and note the finish “goes on and on.”

On the palate, it’s medium to full in body, energetic yet polished: wild berry fruit, pomegranate, cranberry, and iron-mineral core, all carried by crisp acidity and fine, persistent tannins. A finish of smoke, saline rock, violet and dark spice lingers impressively.
CellarTracker

The vintage itself adds context: 2022 on Etna was marked by healthy ripening, good diurnal shift and a growing season that allowed expression of site and mineral clarity. This bottling rewards both early drinking (for its intensity and immediacy) and patient cellaring (for what it will become). Lasting structure suggests 8-12 years of aging potential, perhaps more in optimal cellaring.

Whether you’re a Nebbiolo lover seeking a change of pace, a collector chasing unique terroirs, or simply someone who loves expressive, refined reds with a story — this Anniversario delivers.

In short: this is Etna Rosso elevated. It’s volcanic geology in a glass, restrained but vivid; place-driven yet emotionally powerful. Add the 2022 Anniversario to your cellar and you’re adding an immortal slice of Etna.
