Product Description

Sandwiched between two Premier Crus, this is the single best Village Pommard we have tasted this year.

Sourced from a unique vein of rocky limestone sandwiched directly between two Premier Crus that regularly command $150+ per bottle, this "Village" wine shares their pedigree and soil for a fraction of the cost. As the only red village wine produced by Domaine de Montille in the Côte de Beaune, it receives the exact same "Grand Cru" treatment—native yeast, whole-cluster fermentation, and aging in large demi-muids—as the estate's $300+ bottlings.

"Cras" translates to "chalk" or "rubble" in old Burgundian, and that geology is the key differentiator here. While most Pommard is defined by heavy clay soils that produce rustic, broad-shouldered wines, this site is defined by drainage and stone. The result is a wine that defies the village's stereotype: it possesses the classic Pommard weight and power, but it vibrates with a mineral tension and aromatic lift usually found in Volnay.

The 2022 vintage was a gift for this specific terroir. The warm, sun-drenched growing season ensured the fruit achieved perfect phenolic ripeness, providing a core of sweet, sapid fruit that wraps around the structural bones of the wine. Winemaker Brian Sieve has crafted a bottle that is polished, precise, and incredibly complete. It proves you don't need a Premier Cru label on the bottle to find Premier Cru complexity in the glass.
