2021 Tether Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Tether isn’t “just another Napa Cab.” It’s a deliberately constructed project built around a very specific unfair advantage: access. Kimberly Jones is a well-connected Napa broker whose professional orbit includes some of the valley’s most collectible labels; the point of Tether is to translate that network into a bottle that drinks like a serious Napa blend without needing a cult-wine waiting list. 

The second half of the equation is execution. Winemaker Anna Monticelli brings a résumé that signals real cellar discipline—experience that includes Château Cheval Blanc, plus high-end Napa work (including Seavey and Bryant Family, with Monticelli noted as having spent time as an assistant winemaker at Bryant Family under Philippe Melka). This matters because Tether’s appeal isn’t a gimmick; it’s that the wine is built with the same kind of blending logic and élevage rigor you see in top-tier programs.

Then there’s the part most brands conveniently leave vague: the blend. The 2021 is a Cabernet-led blend (77% Cab) supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec—an architecture that’s classic for Napa when the goal is texture and lift without losing spine. It’s aged 19 months in 100% French oak (60% new), which is substantial enough to feel polished, but specific enough that you can tell this wasn’t “thrown together.” Production is around ~2,100 cases, keeping it in the realm of a real, intentional small-production project rather than mass Napa. 

What’s distinctive in the glass: a mineral, crushed volcanic rock / graphite streak running through the dark fruit and mocha. That’s the hook that separates this from generic “rich Napa.” It reads as place and intent: fruit richness, yes, but tethered to something stony and savory that keeps the wine from becoming syrupy.

The brand’s own framing is about connection (“tether”), and the wine backs that up in a practical way: it’s literally a connection between a broker’s access and a winemaker’s skill set, packaged into a Cabernet that over-delivers for what it is.
