South-Slope Nebbiolo at Altitude

In the foothills of the Alps and the breezy edges of the Mediterranean, the 2021 Sori della Sorba Langhe Nebbiolo emerges as a compelling new benchmark in Nebbiolo from Piedmont—one that combines finesse, purity and site-specific identity in a way that commands attention.

Located in the village of Diano d’Alba, the estate’s south-facing amphitheatre vineyard named “Sorì della Sorba” sits high-up (about 450 m/1,500 ft) on limestone-rich soils mixed with sand and clay.

The term “Sorì” itself denotes a top-exposed hillside, where the sun hits first and snow melts earliest.

Here, the growers—Carlo Mondavi and Giovanna Bagnasco—work under permaculture, organic and biodynamic principles to coax maximum expression of site and Nebbiolo’s noble potential.

What you get with the 2021 vintage is exceptional: lifted aromatics, fine-grained structure, bright acidity and that hallmark Nebbiolo tension between fruit and mineral. Reviewers such as James Suckling awarded it 94 points, calling it “very fresh, bright and pure … sliced strawberry, lemon and floral aromas and flavors, hints of rose petal and fennel.”

The producer adds: “Lifted aromas with notes of crushed black cherries, rose petals, wet rock, fennel seed, white truffles and forest floor… On the palate the wine builds with wild berries, dried rose petals and lavender, orange pith, damp forest floor, truffle and wet rock.”
Sorì della Sorba

In the glass you’ll notice a translucent ruby hue, typical of youthful Nebbiolo, and a bouquet that dances between red berry, floral lift and stony, forest-floor echoes. On the palate the 2021 Sori della Sorba shows mid-weight structure—no blockbuster power but plenty of presence—with crisp acidity, fine tannins and a minerally finish that lingers. The interplay of fruit and site gives you both immediate pleasure and long-term potential: drink now for vibrant charm or cellar for 5–10 years (and likely more) to unlock deeper tertiary layers of truffle, sous-wood, bramble and spice.

This is Nebbiolo’s elegant side—the kind less about massive extraction and more about nuance, transparency and precision. For collectors, it offers the chance to own a rare estate bottling from one of the most exciting young labels in Piedmont. For enthusiasts, it delivers immediate enjoyment with food-friendly versatility—from truffle risotto, wild game, aged cheese or even fine pasta dishes.

If you want a Piedmont Nebbiolo that says “place” as much as grape, that blends old-world elegance with fresh modern energy, the 2021 Sori della Sorba Langhe Nebbiolo stands out. Limited production, cult ambition, genuine pedigree—and a wine that rewards both now and down the line.
