Tasting notes

Aroma

An aristocratic, room-silencing bouquet. It erupts from the glass with brooding layers of black cherry, wild raspberry, and crushed violet, heavily underscored by a profound, earthy core of black truffle, damp limestone, and exotic spice.

Palate

Monumental in scale yet breathtakingly graceful. The palate delivers a massively concentrated, spherical core of dark red fruit, woven seamlessly into a striking, iron-inflected minerality. The old-vine tannins are extraordinarily refined—like fine silk draped over a spine of crushed stone—driving an endlessly resonating, multi-minute finish.

Product Description

The original-vine MCMLV from Hubert Lignier

Sourced exclusively from a microscopic parcel of ancient vines planted by Henri Lignier in 1955, the MCMLV is a breathtaking Grand Cru masterpiece that represents the absolute pinnacle of traditional Burgundy, and we are thrilled to offer it today at a nation-leading $999.

To own a standard bottle of Hubert Lignier’s Clos de la Roche is to own a piece of Côte de Nuits history, but the "MCMLV" (Roman numerals for 1955) exists in an entirely different stratosphere.

Laurent Lignier isolates this specific cuvée solely from his grandfather's original, mid-century plantings. These ancient, deep-rooted vines produce incredibly tiny, thick-skinned berries that translate the limestone and marl of this legendary cru with a level of power, density, and silken finesse that other bottlings simply cannot touch.

Because the 2021 vintage was famously brutal—with severe weather slashing yields across the region—the sheer concentration of this surviving fruit is staggering. Matured completely untouched for up to 22 months on its lees without a single racking, and bottled entirely unfined, this is an unapologetically old-school, investment-grade acquisition. While the market average for this ultra-rare bottle sits well over $1,100, we secured ours at a price that allows us to pass on a genuinely historic value.
