In Detail

Electric, cliffside White Burgundy precision at an unbeatable price.

While neighboring Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet command jaw-dropping prices, savvy Burgundy lovers have quietly turned their gaze to Saint-Romain. Tucked high in the amphitheater-like limestone cliffs of the Côte de Beaune, this cool-climate enclave produces some of the most vibrant, mineral-driven Chardonnay in the entire region. When the famed Montille family applies their master-class winemaking to these high-altitude plots, magic happens.

Domaine de Montille has long set the benchmark for purity, restraint, and precise terroir expression across the Côte. Through their boutique negociant arm, Maison de Montille, Étienne de Montille sources prime fruit from ancient 1980s vines in Saint-Romain's coveted Le Jarron site. The steep elevation and thin, fractured limestone soils force the vine roots deep into bedrock, creating fruit packed with electric tension, vibrant freshness, and intense aromatic clarity.

In the cellar, Montille uses a light hand: minimal new oak (just 10%), gentle lees contact, and a final rest in stainless steel to preserve the vineyard's sparkling acidity. The resulting 2020 Saint-Romain Blanc is a total triumph. It pours a gleaming pale gold, leaping from the glass with Asian pear, lemon curd, and white blossom notes, supported by a chiseled backbone of green apple and crushed stone.
