In Detail

Pure organic vibrancy from Barolo master Ferdinando Principiano

When most drinkers think of Piedmont red wine, heavy Nebbiolo usually dominates the conversation. But ask any local winemaker what they actually pop open at the dinner table on a Tuesday night, and the answer is always Barbera. And nobody crafts a more electric, drinkable expression than winemaking pioneer Ferdinando Principiano.

While many modern producers load up Barbera with heavy oak barrels to artificial effect, Principiano takes the opposite path. Sourced from organically farmed vines in the rolling hills of Monforte d’Alba, this 2020 release sees zero oak contact. Fermented entirely in stainless steel with wild indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention, it retains every ounce of the grape's raw, joyful personality.

The result in the glass is pure liquid vitality. It leaps forward with crunchy marionberry, dark plum, and wild herbal lift, backed by Barbera's trademark mouthwatering acidity and plush, supple tannins. It is endlessly versatile at the table, cutting through rich pasta ragus, cured meats, or wood-fired pizza with effortless precision.

This is high-vibe, low-intervention Italian red wine at its absolute finest—the kind of bottle you open and realize is empty ten minutes later. We secured a tight allocation of this vibrant 2020 vintage for WineKey members.
