Pure, Old-School Northern Rhône Syrah

In Detail

Rugged, whole-cluster 2020 Syrah from mythical Chaillot.

Guillaume Gilles inherited a Cornas legend's old vines, trained in Jean-Louis Chave's cellar, and now makes some of the most thrilling traditional Syrah in the Northern Rhône.

When the great Robert Michel retired, he handed his historic parcels in the famed Chaillot vineyard to Gilles, his protégé and the grandson of yet another Cornas legend, Marcel Juge. Gilles works those steep granite terraces by hand and vinifies exactly as Michel did: whole clusters, native yeasts, old oak with no new wood, no fining, no filtration. Nothing comes between you and the terroir.

The result is classic, uncompromising Cornas, brawny, deep, and profound, with concentrated dark fruit, black olive, licorice, smoke, and an iron-laced mineral core, framed by remarkably fine tannins. Powerful enough for a roast tonight, structured enough to cellar a decade.

And there's barely any of it. Gilles farms a tiny patch of vines, the wine is allocated, and bottles like this never reach the shelf. Don't wait.
