2019 Xavier Gerard Cote-Rotie

Xavier Gerard is one of Rhône’s emerging voices, and his 2019 Côte-Rôtie captures the energy of that journey. Since taking over in 2012, Gerard has reoriented the domaine toward fruit purity, vine expression, and terroir nuance, stepping away from negociant sales and bottling everything under his own label. His estate cuvée sources primarily from the Mollard lieu-dit, blended with small amounts from Font-Jean, Viallière, and La Landonne, and employs a flexible approach to whole cluster depending on vintage character.

2019 in the Northern Rhône was a warm, expressive vintage. Yet Gerard’s style ensures that the wine never loses its sense of place: vivid fruit, lifted aromatics, and tension between generosity and structure. The 2019 cuvée shows both depth and freshness—dark berries framed by aromatic spice and a mineral spine.

In the glass, aromas of blackberry, cassis, backed by espresso bean, lavender, cracked pepper, and smoke rise immediately. On swirling, darker spice and graphite emerge. The palate is rich but not indulgent: ripe black fruit laced with pepper, soft herbal notes, and a backbone of sturdy tannin and stony mineral drive. It carries long, with smoke, iron, and savory echoes.

This is a wine for those who admire Rhône in both its sensual and structural extremes—one that performs on the table now with decanting and will evolve for 10–15 years with layered complexity.
