A "Monopole" Masterpiece from the Legendary 2019 Vintage

2019 Estate Reverchon Riesling Spatlese Mosel

It is often said that while the Mosel is the "body" of German Riesling, the Saar is its "nerve." And no wine demonstrates that nervous, electric energy better than this 2019 Spätlese from Weingut Reverchon. For decades, Reverchon was the "sleeping giant" of the region—an estate with incredible historic vineyards that was underperforming. That has all changed. A "Virtual" Monopole: Reverchon owns nearly the entire Filzener Herrenberg vineyard. This provides a singular, uncopiable expression of slate terroir that you literally cannot get from any other producer. The 2019 "Holy Grail": Widely considered the best vintage in 20 years, 2019 offered the rare combo of high sugar and sky-high acidity. In Detail

Sourced from the steep slate walls of the Filzener Herrenberg, this 2019 Spätlese is a vibrating, electric example of why the Saar is the most exciting region in Germany right now.

With new investment and a renewed focus on quality, they are now producing wines that rival the giants of the valley (like Van Volxem and Von Othegraven).

This wine comes from their crown jewel: the Filzener Herrenberg. Reverchon owns almost the entire vineyard, making it a de facto Monopole. It is a steep, south-facing wall of Devonian slate that catches the wind and the sun in equal measure. In the 2019 vintage—a year famous for combining high ripeness with razor-sharp acidity—this terroir produced a wine of startling contradiction. It is luscious and sweet on the attack, yet bone-dry and salty on the finish. It creates a tension on the palate that is addictive.
