Tasting notes

Aroma

Pronounced aromas of crushed cherry, wild rose petals, and pine forest evolve into star anise, dried thyme, pipe tobacco, and damp earth.

Palate

Structured and electric on the entry. Vibrant raspberry and dark plum weave into fine-grained, gravelly tannins and bright natural acidity, concluding on a persistent, spice-laced cadence.

In Detail

Old-vine Nebbiolo harvested from a striking, sun-drenched natural amphitheater bordering Montestefano

The Rocca family built its house on top of the Ronchi cru itself, on Barbaresco's eastern edge near Neive, and four generations have worked the slope since. Giancarlo Rocca walks from his cellar door to his Nebbiolo in under a minute. Montestefano borders the cru to the north, Moccagatta to the south, and the amphitheater between them catches the morning sun. Everything gets picked by hand.

The classic bottling blends Ronchi fruit with the family's other parcels, vines averaging 30 to 40 years, all Nebbiolo, fermented in steel and raised in a mix of small and large oak. Galloni says the estate "has been on a roll" and that the wines carry power with the frame to hold it. A magnum slows all of that down, which for Nebbiolo is the whole point.

Gaja charges what Gaja charges (don't ask!) for something about as good. Down the road, the family that lives on its own cru fills this by hand, and a 1.5 liter still costs dinner party money. Bring it, pour it slowly, and let the second half make the case for buying more.
