2018 Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino

High above the rest of Montalcino, Le Ragnaie farms sites that literally climb past the altitude traditional Brunello rules even permit. In Detail

A 2018 Brunello from Montalcino's highest vines.

High above the rest of Montalcino, Le Ragnaie farms sites that literally climb past the altitude traditional Brunello rules even permit. When self-described traditionalist Riccardo Campinoti took over in the early 2000s, he recognized the sheer potential of these cool, lofty sites. Working with vines up to eighty years old, he farms entirely organically, relying on native-yeast fermentations and long resting periods in massive Slavonian oak casks. The sommelier world caught on incredibly fast. Today, Le Ragnaie is one of the most chased names in Tuscany, produced in tiny quantities and snapped up the moment it lands.

The altitude is the real secret here. While 2018 gave much of Montalcino big, heavy Brunellos pushing 15 percent alcohol, Campinoti’s high-elevation fruit ripened slowly, holding onto its natural freshness. The result is an ethereal, perfumed wine that clocks in at a graceful 13.5 percent. Where others went heavy, this went elegant. This is Brunello for collectors who prize pristine freshness over sheer force. It is the cult bottle insiders quietly hoard, and there is never enough to go around.
