Tasting notes
Aroma
A wildly complex and intoxicating nose. It opens with rich aromas of baked quince, dried apricot, and crushed almonds. As it breathes, profound savory notes of wet wool, beeswax, and a striking, flinty minerality take center stage.
Palate
Intensely concentrated, textural, and thrilling on the palate. It delivers a deep, layered core of orchard fruit and a hint of almond marzipan, all framed by an elegant, silvery bitterness. The incredibly long, dry finish is driven by a powerful streak of rocky acidity and a touch of savory herbs, leaving your mouth watering for food.

Product Description
1.5 liters of perfectly aged, Grand Cru-level Chenin Blanc
This is an impossibly rare 2018 Magnum of Domaine du Closel's top cuvée, delivering the power, texture, and immense aging potential of a $300+ Grand Cru White Burgundy, but representing one of the greatest values in world-class Chenin Blanc.
Finding the iconic "Clos du Papillon" with a few years of perfect cellar age is hard enough, but securing it in the large 1.5L format—which is practically non-existent on the US retail market right now—is a genuine collector's dream.
Evelyne de Pontbriand is the visionary behind Domaine du Closel, located at the historic Château des Vaults in Savennières. She has transformed the estate by embracing strict biodynamic farming and minimal-intervention winemaking. The "Clos du Papillon," named for the vineyard's butterfly-like shape, is her masterpiece. Grown on shallow, well-draining soils of schist, rhyolite, and quartz, the grapes are harvested in multiple passes to capture perfect ripeness, often including a tiny touch of botrytis for added complexity.
Unlike many modern white wines, Evelyne allows the Clos du Papillon to ferment naturally for almost a year in barriques, followed by extended aging on the lees without oxygen exposure. This patient, traditional approach results in a 2018 Chenin Blanc of mind-bending texture, depth, and tension. It is a profound, dry, and deeply savory wine that is just beginning to enter its prime drinking window.
