Comtes Lafon is synonymous with Burgundian heritage—an estate dating back to 1760 and stewarded today under the watchful eye of Camille Giroud and the Lafon family. Their Volnay holdings have long been the benchmark for elegant red Burgundy, and the Santenots-du-Milieu parcel exemplifies that style: deep soils over limestone, perfect southern exposure, and a reputation for producing wines that combine silk, depth, and aromatic precision. The magnum format chosen here amplifies that expression: slower maturation kinetics, increased textural complexity, and enhanced longevity.
The vintage of 2017 is often called the “quiet class act” of the decade—moderate heat, consistent weather, and low stress, yielding wines that emphasize finesse over force. In Santenots, that translated into beautifully ripened fruit with purity intact: strawberry, cranberry, rose petal, and spice framed by breathable tannin and crystalline structure.
In crafting this wine, Lafon approached the parcel with deliberate restraint—gravity-assisted sorting, native yeast fermentations, gentle macerations, and élevage in large barrels with 20–25% new oak. The magnum format extends its aging arc but also intensifies its perfume and mouthfeel.
Pouring from magnum adds drama: the bouquet opens with wild red fruit, rose petal, sous-bois, violet, and a suggestion of black tea and iron. On the palate, a canvas of silken cherry and redcurrant unfolds over fine tannins, carrying tension and purity that streak into a long, mineral-etched finish. The experience is both powerful and elegant—a Volnay built to age 15+ years but already speaking to the heart.
For the luxury buyer, this magnum is a statement of stature: a flagship from a storied estate, scaled up and refined for lasting shelf presence. Serve with slow-roasted duck, truffle risotto, or premium game—and carry it out at the peak of its grandeur.
