The perfectly aged, heavily lauded 2016 Château Grand Mayne
2016 is one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages in living memory, and the top Saint-Émilion estates priced it to match. So when a classified growth from that vintage turns up below the market, it's worth a hard look.
Château Grand Mayne sits on the western côtes of Saint-Émilion, neighbor to icons like Angélus, Canon, and Beauséjour Bécot, a short walk from Cheval Blanc. The Nony family has run it since 1934, and over the past several vintages, with Louis Mitjavile (son of cult Tertre Rôteboeuf's François) advising, the estate has moved into a more elegant, refined, terroir-driven style, by the family's own account more open and accessible young, while keeping its old aging power.
The 2016 is built on the estate's clay-limestone hillside, a Merlot-led blend with Cabernet Franc. Expect fragrant kirsch, redcurrant, and plum, garrigue and spice, a rich, plush body, and a long, mineral finish. Drink it now or cellar it two decades.
