Château d'Avize: Champagne's rare single-estate Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs
In all of Champagne, only three properties are legally allowed to put the word "Château" on a label—and only one of them sits inside a Grand Cru.
This is it.
Salon's 2013 Le Mesnil averages $1,325 a bottle on Wine-Searcher. Château d'Avize 2013 comes from the same Côte des Blancs slope, the same cool October vintage, the same ten years underground, and the same 2023 disgorgement. Ours is $175.
Château d'Avize is a single 2.13-hectare plot of Chardonnay planted in 1968 on pure white limestone in the grandest village of the Côte des Blancs. Farmed biodynamically and vinified entirely on-site, it is one of the rarest allocations of the holiday season.
This is the second vintage of Château d'Avize ever released. Hervé Jestin, 24 years the chef de cave at Duval-Leroy, makes it from the first pressing only, ages it ten months in oak and nine years on the lees, and disgorged the 2013 in April 2023 with 2.3 grams of dosage, less than half of Krug's. It earned 95 points from Decanter, while Berry Bros. & Rudd declared simply: "Avize has a new star."
Unwinding with toasted almond, brioche, and electric lemon-lime energy, it cuts effortlessly through rich Thanksgiving feasts and New Year’s toasts alike.
