In Detail

This wine was made when NSYNC was peaking

Founded in 1985 in Viana, Bodegas Ondarre—part of the famed Grupo Olarra family—was established with a focused mission: to craft traditional, highly structured Rioja wines deeply tied to the distinctive limestone and clay soils of Rioja Oriental. The 1995 vintage stands as one of the hallmark years of the decade, producing robust, vibrant reds equipped with the natural acidity and tannic backbone required for decades of graceful evolution.

Crafted from a classic blend of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, and Graciano harvested from old vines along the north bank of the Ebro River, this '95 Reserva underwent extensive aging in both American and French oak barrels. Over thirty-one years of dark cellar rest, the wine's muscular youthful structure has softened into pure, harmonious elegance, revealing the profound depth that only time can bestow upon vintage Rioja.

In the glass, it displays a glowing garnet hue with brick-orange edges. Complex tertiary aromas of dried fig, cigar box, star anise, crushed walnuts, and withered rose lift gracefully. The palate is light-to-medium-bodied and utterly seamless, offering flavors of dried damson plum, roasted tea leaf, and subtle clove held together by resolved, powdery tannins and a vibrant line of natural acidity.

This 1995 Reserva is a spectacular example of fully mature Spanish winemaking at its peak. Uncork it alongside roast lamb chops, wild mushroom risotto, or aged manchego cheese.
