In Detail

More Classic Than 80's Rock

If Brunello di Montalcino has a north star, it is Tenuta Greppo and the Riserva of Biondi-Santi. Produced only in exceptional vintages and aged for years in large Slavonian oak casks before release, this wine is the purest expression of Sangiovese Grosso (BBS11 clone) and a symbol of Tuscany’s enduring traditions. By the late 1980s, Franco Biondi-Santi was still guiding the estate, and his unyielding vision of elegance, restraint, and longevity remained central.

The 1988 vintage in Montalcino was generous but balanced, producing structured wines with excellent fruit concentration. While many Brunellos from the decade have faded, the Riservas from Biondi-Santi stand out for their poise and staying power. After more than three decades, this wine has matured into a refined, hauntingly aromatic expression that captures the very essence of classical Brunello.

In the glass, the 1988 Riserva presents a garnet core with orange-brick hues at the rim, a clear marker of its age. Aromatically, it is layered with dried red cherry, violet, leather, and citrus peel, accented by cedar, tea leaf, and earthy truffle notes. On the palate, it remains astonishingly fresh, with acidity that keeps the wine lifted and tannins that, though softened, still frame the fruit elegantly. The flavors unfold with remarkable detail: dried strawberry, orange zest, forest floor, and mineral spice, carried on a finish that lingers with quiet persistence.

For collectors, this wine is a piece of vinous history. Few estates can claim to have shaped an entire category, and fewer still produce bottles that, decades later, remain vital, complete, and collectible. The 1988 Riserva is one of those rare treasures: an investment-grade wine, but also a sensual experience, best enjoyed with simple but profound pairings like roast lamb, game birds, or aged pecorino. Opened today, it speaks of an era and a philosophy that time cannot erase.
