In Detail
Silky, fully mature Rioja Alta red aged in custom handcrafted oak casks
Founded in 1932 in the historic Barrio de la Estación of Haro, Bodegas Muga is one of Rioja’s defining traditionalists. What makes Muga truly unique is their refusal to modernize: they remain one of the only wineries in Spain to craft and repair every single wooden vat and oak barrel in their own in-house cooperage. In the outstanding 1981 Rioja vintage, Muga produced bottles built with extraordinary structure and acidity—making this 45-year-old Crianza an incredible museum-grade rarity.
In the early 1980s, Muga’s Crianza was crafted to a standard that rivals today’s Reserva and Gran Reserva bottlings. A traditional blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo, and 3% Graciano, the wine underwent extended aging in handcrafted oak casks followed by decades of peaceful cellar rest. Over the course of 45 years, the aggressive youth of Rioja Alta's iron-rich clay soils has softened into pure, Burgundian silkiness.
In the glass, it displays a pale mahogany hue with brilliant clarity. Complex tertiary aromas of dried cherry, sandalwood, cigar box, saddle leather, and dried orange peel lift gracefully from the glass. The palate is light-bodied, seamless, and completely integrated, offering weightless flavors of dried plum, sweet tobacco, and damp earth supported by a mouthwatering streak of natural acidity.
Finding pristine, fully mature 1981 Rioja from a premier producer under $150 is nearly impossible today. Uncork this masterpiece alongside roast leg of lamb, Jamón Ibérico, or aged Manchego cheese.
