In Detail

Satin-textured 48-year-old Rioja Alta Gran Reserva

Founded in 1870, Bodegas Montecillo is the third-oldest winery in Rioja and a legendary benchmark of traditional winemaking in Rioja Alta. The 'Viña Monty' label earned historic fame in 1979 when a bottle of the 1970 Gran Reserva bested top Bordeaux Grand Crus in a blind tasting in Amsterdam, forever establishing Montecillo among the global elite. This 1978 Gran Reserva comes from that golden era of winemaking, when long barrel aging and pure Tempranillo structure created wines capable of evolving for half a century.

Crafted under the leadership of the Navajas family before their transition to Osborne, this 1978 vintage spent over three years aging in handcrafted oak barrels followed by decades of undisturbed cellar maturation. The extreme longevity of Montecillo’s Gran Reservas stems from sourcing high-elevation Tempranillo fruit across Rioja Alta, preserving a core of vibrant natural acidity that sustains the wine over decades.

At 48 years of age, this 1978 release offers a rare glimpse into classic 1970s Rioja. In the glass, it reveals a luminous mahogany rim with pale garnet depth. Delicate tertiary aromas of dried red currant, cedar chest, rose petals, and beeswax lift effortlessly. On the palate, the tannins are resolved and satin-textured, delivering weightless flavors of dried cranberry, pipe tobacco, and savory earth that trail into a long, balsamic-tinged finish.
