Legendary late-harvest Chenin Blanc held in ancient chalk cellars for decades.
Founded in 1787, Moulin Touchais is one of the most enigmatic houses in the Loire Valley. Located in Doué-la-Fontaine, the estate holds millions of bottles resting in labyrinthine, subterranean chalk cellars. What makes Touchais singular is their uncompromising commitment to cellar aging: no bottle leaves the estate until it has matured underground for at least ten to twenty years, with vintage reserves routinely held back for half a century.
The secret behind this 58-year-old Chenin Blanc's indestructible longevity lies in a distinct harvest technique. The Touchais family picks 20% of their fruit early in the season while green and brimming with razor-sharp, natural acidity. The remaining 80% is picked late in the autumn, concentrated by noble rot and over-ripeness. When blended, the youthful acidity locks in the sugar, preserving the wine's energy across decades of dark cellar rest.
In the glass, the 1968 vintage glows with a deep burnished amber-gold hue. The nose is extraordinarily complex, unfolding with notes of candied orange peel, acacia honey, preserved apricot, beeswax, and warm saffron. On the palate, it balances luscious sweetness with a searing, mouthwatering citrus drive, delivering flavors of quince paste, marmalade, and toasted nuttiness that echo through a crisp, everlasting finish.
Acquiring a pristine, single-vintage white with nearly six decades of cellar provenance under one hundred dollars is almost unheard of today. Serve slightly chilled alongside blue cheese, foie gras, or fruit-based desserts.
