Gioacchino De Forville, a Walloon, moved his family to Piedmont in 1848, settled in the village of Barbaresco by 1860, and bet on Nebbiolo before Nebbiolo had a market. He fell in with Domizio Cavazza, the professor who effectively invented Barbaresco as a wine, and the family has grown it ever since, selling in bulk until 1940 and under its own label after. Five generations later, brothers Valter and Paolo Anfosso run the same house.

The Loreto is the top of their range, a parcel inside the bigger Ovello cru on clay and limestone, with vines averaging 40 years. The winemaking has not moved in decades. The juice ferments in steel, rests two full years in big Slavonian casks, and gets bottled with nothing added and nothing pulled out. The 2019 season ran warm by day and cool by night, exactly what Nebbiolo wants, and the Loreto carries more depth and more aging room than anything else in the cellar.

The famous names in this village raised their prices decades ago. The Belgian house never got the memo. Buy it by the case, put half away, and thank the fifth generation later.
